La Bohemia del Tetunte: el rock de Mario Guirola
Mario Guirola dio sus primeros pasos en la música allá por el año 1991. Su primer banda llevaba como nombre “Cenit”. Ese primer experimento duró sólo un par de años. Luego, Guirola junto a Manuel Baires, Edwin Regalado y Roberto Morán forman el grupo “Bohemia” en el año de 1994.
En estos años existía un antro llamado “Reggae Bar”. Mario cuenta que Bohemia fue el grupo “de planta”, de tal lugar ubicado en la Zona Rosa. “En ese lugar nos desarrollamos, pero tocábamos mucho Reggae, música de Los Fabulosos Cádillac y otros covers”.
La primera música original de Guirola y compañía estaba muy influida por estos ritmos. Sin embargo, a finales del año 1995 el grupo empieza a explorar ritmos más pesados. Reggae Bar cierra sus puertas y la banda queda en el aire. “Queda libre de hacer música un poco más fuerte”, explica.
Entre 1993 y 1995 el grupo pudo meter dos canciones en la extinta radio Super Stereo, un medio de comunicación pionero que empezó a darle importancia al rock y a la música nacional. “Las canciones se llamaban “Nube Rosa” y “La Encontraré”, era música Reggae”. Las canciones tuvieron bastante aceptación pero el sonido no era el que la banda quería.
En 1996 “Bohemia” tiene su primer cisma. “Se fue el tecladista Roberto Morán y Edwin Regalado, el baterista”. En el lugar de Regalado entró Richard Ortiz, recomendado directamente por Edgardo “Caito” Carrillo, un maestro de la batería salvadoreña.
“Nos quedamos como un trío que pretendía hacer música con más influencia metal. Empezaron a salir las canciones nuevas que empezaron a pegar. Nos olvidamos del público que teníamos anteriormente, de las canciones que habían tenido éxito comercial en la radio y empezamos a hacer un poquito más de rock”.
Los éxitos más sonados de Mario Guirola estaban a la vuelta de la esquina. Para el año de 1997 se escriben las canciones “Poema de Amor”, “La serpiente emplumada” y “1932”. Esas canciones y otras fueron grabadas ese año en el estudio de Roberto Quezada del grupo Yolocamba I ta. El primer álbum de la banda se titularía “Siguanaba Dancer” y saldría en el año 1998.
Luego en ese año se retira del grupo Manuel Baires y entra Daniel Pocasangre. Entra también Gerardo Pardo en la guitarra. “Empezamos a hacer música más técnica, los músicos estaban en un nivel más elevado”, explica Mario.
En el año 1999 Bohemia queda en animación suspendida ya que Mario viaja a los Estados Unidos y reside en Nueva York por un tiempo. “Regresé a inicios del 2000, pero la banda ya se empezaba a disgregar. Cuando regresé sólo tocamos un par de veces más y en el 2000 se deshizo”.
Mario no dejó de tocar. Paralelo a Bohemia el rockero participa en otro proyecto que llevaba el nombre de “Tetunte”.
“Yo conozco a “Carlangas”, (ex – de la propia) entre los años de 1997 – 98 a Juan Carlos Saavedra (que tenía su proyecto ID). Nos reunimos para hacer un proyecto pelado, malcriado, un grupo irreverente, y por eso le pusimos tetunte. Fuimos de las primeras bandas en las que salíamos disfrazados, llenos de lodo..., cosas así”, dice Guirola.
De ese grupo salen temas muy recordados como “El chele papaya”, que también fue muy pedida en las radios nacionales. “Ahora que regresó Carlangas de Estados Unidos pretendemos remontar esa banda”, explica Guirola.
Alrededor de junio del año 2001, Mario Guirola se lanza como solista. “Mi onda era rehacer una de mis dos bandas. Pero seguí componiendo nuevo material y grabándolas como demos. Del tiempo con Bohemia logramos hacer unas 40 canciones. Con Tetunte compusimos unas 15 canciones y ahora estoy haciendo nuevos temas pero sin banda. No sabía como ponerles y opté por ponerle mi nombre. No es algo definitivo. Puede ser que volvamos con Tetunte o con Bohemia. Algo de música tiene que salir bajo mi nombre, quizá un disco con unos 5 o 6 temas. Sin embargo he estado platicando con la gente de Bohemia y como que si tenemos algo de melancolía y puede ser que regresemos”.
En los últimos meses Mario ha tenido mucha actividad. Su presentación en el San Salvarock 2002 fue una de las mejores y de las más aplaudidas. Actualmente el músico se presenta con frecuencia en el Atrio Café.
Malas influencias
“Comencé a escuchar música rock como desde séptimo grado. En ese entonces escuchaba música de Los Ángeles del Infierno. Metallica, Slayer, Napalm Death y bandas bastantes pesadas. Sin embargo cuando entré a estudiar en el colegio Externado San José me empecé a clavar en otra manera de pensar y empiezo a escuchar música de Silvio Rodríguez y así fue como empecé a tocar la guitarra. La música rock estaba dentro de mi pero aprendí a tocar con Silvio”, afirma. Luego, de la experiencia de Reggae Bar surgen influencias como Bob Marley y otros músicos de este género. Guirola dice también haber sido impactado mucho por la música de Nine Inch Nails (su banda favorita) y Rage against the Machine.
En retrospectiva, Mario Guirola explica cuales son las canciones que más satisfacciones le han traído: “Quizás el “Poema de Amor”. Fue una ruptura. Un cambio. En ese entonces empezamos a hacer música diferente y tuvimos una gran aceptación de la gente. En la etapa nueva, hay una que se llama “La Siguanaba”, me gusta bastante porque agarramos la leyenda coloquial y hablamos del fenómeno urbano de las dormilonas (prostitutas que drogan a sus clientes para robarles todo”. Esa canción me trae buenos recuerdos. Cada canción tiene un sentimiento especial”.
En cuanto a estilo, Mario explica que cada cierto tiempo su estilo musical sufre algunas mutaciones. “En un principio fue más reggae y latin rock. Luego fue un poquito más Hop con Progresivo y un poco de metal. Ahora las cosas que estamos haciendo son un poquito más experimentales, más hardcore y heavy metal y hasta grunge. No nos ceñimos a un solo concepto”.

En el año recien pasado Mario Guirola junto a un grupo de jóvenes fueron arrestados en una fiesta privada por supuesto incitación al consumo de drogas. El caso conocido como “Tormenta Tóxica” fue polémico pero al final la mayoría de los involucrados salieron libres después de algunos meses en la cárcel ya que la fiscalía de la república no pudo encontrar pruebas que los incriminaran.
“La experiencia fue bien... humanizante en el sentido que te hace crecer. Lo más importante de todo eso fue que nosotros salimos sobreseídos definitivamente bajo las leyes de El Salvador por no habernos encontrado ninguna prueba, por no haber ningún vínculo y ni una tan sola evidencia en nuestra contra. La fiscalía nunca replicó nada a nuestra defensa. Sólo esperaron que el proceso nos desechara por que todo fue un error de proceso y eso fue lo que sucedió. Estamos sin antecedentes penales. Somos personas completamente libres. La experiencia te acerca más a la familia, sentimos la importancia de las cosas que son primordiales”, explica Guirola.
Mario explica que el tiempo en la cárcel sin duda será reflejada en el nuevo material.
En cuanto a relación entre la música y las drogas Mario concluye con esta reflexión: “Yo creo que es una relación que le debemos de tomar importancia. A veces es muy estrecha y a veces es muy comprometedora. Tenemos que pensar que cada acción tiene una reacción y debemos saber como encausar eso. Si lo sabes hacer no te va a pasar nada. Hay que tener cuidado. Hay que hablar bien del rock”.
En cuanto a afinidad con otras bandas, Mario dice que su banda es cuate con Clandestino 10 – 4, “Sus letras hablan de la realidad, en eso nos parecemos y compartimos un miembro del grupo (“La Gota” Tovar). Guirola también tiene mucho respeto por la gente de Aborígenes, Ayutush, Kabak y Pescozada (Hip Hop).
