A finales de 1978 por la inquietud de 4 jóvenes quienes andaban en bicicleta y consecuentemente empezaron a tocar algunos instrumentos musicales a nivel colegial nace una agrupación llamada KARN, lo que significaba las primeras iniciales de sus miembros originales; Kristián, Ayax, Rafael y Mauricio a quien llamaban Neto.
KARN se caracterizó por tocar música original al estilo "Beat Inglés". El grupo se mantuvo asÌ hasta 1981.
En 1982 aparece Francisco Elías (Primo de Ayax y Kristián) quien sugiere el nombre de OVNI e introduce a los miembros un nuevo género musical: "El Rock Progresivo", éste estilo de música impactó a los miembros del nuevo OVNI y con el afán de introducirse a este anexan un nuevo miembro; Mauricio Paredes quien se encargaría de los teclados.
OVNI entonces quedó conformado así: RAFAEL ALFARO: Guitarras + Voces. KRISTIAN CALDERON: 2a Guitarra. MAURICIO ALFARO: Batería. AYAX CALDERON: Bajo. MAURICIO PARADES: Teclados.
En este mismo año OVNI tiene su primer concierto en el "Gimnasio Nacional" cuando se realizó "El 1er Concierto de Rock Nacional". La originalidad los caracterizó desde el principio ya que se destacaron por tocar música propia y completamente en inglés tales como; Nights, The Four Men, Ovni's Opening, The Lonely Man, etc. Con estos temas la gente los empezó a catalogar bajo el estilo "Tecno-Rock".
En 1983 se presentan en el Correpatín y lanzan su primer tema a nivel radial llamado; "Nights" (Noches), algunos medios se interesan por el estilo tan peculiar de OVNI y se hacen algunos programas especiales a nivel radial.
1984 no es muy trascendente para OVNI, preparan programas especiales al los cuales dedican gran parte de su tiempo y esfuerzo. Estos se caracterizan por su gran influencia progresiva, canciones completamente originales, largas y en inglés entre ellas: Penemunde, Nights, Nasca, Andro P-2, etc. Los programas sólo sonaron en algunas radios y no trascendieron. A finales de este año se dieron algunas presentaciones en el "Teatro de Cámara" y a finales de 1985 se realiza un concierto en "El Hotel El Salvador Sheraton" el cual marcó la salida de Mauricio Paredes de OVNI, formándolo asÌ sus 4 miembros originales. Esto no detiene al grupo y lanzan un nuevo tema llamado: "Since You've Been Gone" (Desde que Te has ido) el cual no tuvo mucha difusión a nivel radial.
1986 fue una época de oscurantismo para OVNI; Rafael Alfaro quien había fundado el grupo sale fuera del país para continuar sus estudios en Ingeniería de Sonido, los otros 3 miembros se dedican a nuevos intereses; Mauricio Alfaro a los Teclados, Kristián Calderón se interesa en el Bajo, y ambos junto con Ayax empiezan a componer, de esta manera forman un trío a nivel experimental llamado "ARC".
En 1987 Rafael Alfaro vuelve a El Salvador y como los demás miembros manifiesta nuevas ideas e inquietudes, una de ellas fue la de cambiar el formato de las canciones de OVNI del Inglés al Español. Pero además el grupo sufre una metamorfosis; Ayax deja de tocar el Bajo para dedicarse al aspecto técnico del grupo en sus presentaciones en vivo, Kristián pasa de la 2da. Guitarra al Bajo y Mauricio de la Batería a los Teclados y se introduce a Roberto Monje quien se encargaría de la batería, de esta manera para 1987 OVNI estaba conformado de la siguiente manera: Rafael Alfaro: Guitarra y Voces, Kristián Calderón: Bajo, Mauricio Alfaro: Teclados y Roberto Monje: Batería.
El cambio del Inglés al Español marcó la pauta para un resurgimiento de OVNI. A finales de este mismo año se organiza un concierto pro-juguete que se lleva a cabo en la UCA. En esta misma época y principios de 1988 OVNI se dedica a grabar sus primeros temas en español (los cuales incluyeron en el concierto de la UCA) siempre siguiendo su línea progresiva; "CIENCIA MUERTA", "LUNA", "HOMBRE GENESIS" y "CELULA" (esta ultima es una obra la cual se compone de 5 movimientos y su duración es de 15 min.). Se escoge el tema "LUNA" para la promoción del grupo y este resulta un éxito a nivel radial. El resurgimiento de OVNI en Español despierta de nuevo el interés en los medios y se realizan programas especiales a nivel Radio y TV., además de un concierto realizado en La Alianza Francesa titulado "Rock con Amor".
A mediados de este año el grupo promueve un concierto enteramente de OVNI en el "Teatro de Caess" el cual tiene un gran éxito, lastimosamente el grupo deja pasar este auge y canciones como "Ciencia muerta" y "Hombre Génesis" pasan desapercibidas. Un nuevo tema es lanzado a finales de este año: "LA VENGANZA DEL AYER" el cual tiene como propósito promover de nuevo al grupo, en este tema OVNI trata de adaptar un poco su estilo progresivo a algo más accesible y los resultados son ambiguos ya que la gente que los había venido escuchando se mostró un tanto confusa por su nuevo cambio. 1989 comienza con un concierto en el "Tesoro Beach" de El Salvador el cual tuvo muy buenos comentarios a pesar de algunos imprevistos en el mismo. Roberto Monje se separa de OVNI y este queda conformado por 3 de sus miembros originales; RAFAEL ALFARO, MAURICIO ALFARO y KRISTIAN Calderón.
Para 1990 Rafael Alfaro lanza un proyecto como solista llamado "ERES YO". Por su parte OVNI comienza a preparar su primer 45 r.p.m. el cual lanza a principios de 1990 con los temas: "EN EL REINO DE LA ROSA" y "TUS SIGNOS", teniendo mucho éxito. En 1991 OVNI lanza su tema llamado "A MARTE" llegando a los primeros lugares a nivel radial, y de el cual se tiene un video clip al igual que para "El Reino de la Rosa". A principios de Abril lanzan otro tema llamado "EL ANGEL", un tema muy comentado debido a que es una crítica a lo sucedido cuando el grupo estaba contratado para alternar con un artista extranjero y éste no los deja tocar, estos dos temas muestran una tendencia más accesible musicalmente hablando. Participan en el Segundo Concierto de Rock Nacional en este mismo mes y se planean otras presentaciones y producciones próximas.
A finales de este año producen el álbum conceptual "PALABRAS" el cual se compone de ocho palabras las cuales eran cada una un tema musical dentro del mismo, fue además el primero en comercializarse en cassette. Los temas "Lluvias" y "Sueños" tuvieron muy buena aceptación radial.
Para este entonces OVNI ya no veía las canciones como sencillos sino que trataba de buscar un concepto en el cual basar una producción con un tema centralizado. En 1993 Gabriel Catena (Argentino) se incorpora en el bajo y se comienza la producción del álbum IRIS a la -1 (Arco Iris) el cual conceptualizó cada canción como un color, de éste proyecto "LA DANZA DEL SOL" y "VIOLETA" fueron los temas que sonaron más. A mediados de esta producción Kristián y Ajax Calderón dejan la banda, quedando conformado OVNI así: Rafael Alfaro: Guitarras y voces, Mauricio Alfaro: Teclados y Batería, Gabriel Catena: Bajo y se incorpora al tecla dista Luis Mario Magaña para conciertos.
La banda se va caracterizando más y más por sus producciones que por sus conciertos ya que estos se vuelven escasos a medida que la música se dificulta presentarla en vivo por las limitantes técnicas . Los proyectos de Rafael Alfaro como solista se intensifican y produce temas como "MI ELLA, TU", "MIS HUELLAS", "ANHELO", etc. los cuales tienen una buena aceptación radial ya que reflejaban un lado más romántico del guitarrista. En 1995 se produce OVNI... EN ALGÚN REINO, éste álbum es el primer CD de la banda y se trata de una recopilación de los temas mas programables a nivel radial (como ellos mismos lo describen) con un tema nuevo "RIO CIRCULAR" y tres bunos tracks de Rafael Alfaro como solista.
Para la promoción se incluye a Gerardo Cotto en la segunda guitarra y a Gerardo Mora en la batería, quedando Rafael en primera guitarra y voz, Mauricio en los teclados y Gabriel en el bajo.
Con esta alineación OVNI pudo interpretar temas en vivo que no había sido posible hacerlo antes por falta de recursos técnicos y humanos. Para este entonces los intereses individuales de cada miembro eran diferentes Gabriel estaba a punto de regresar a Argentina, Mauricio quería especializarse en su carrera de Ing. Civil y Rafael se involucró más en su proyecto como solista produciendo en 1996 RETRATOS, el cual fue también un álbum conceptual en el que experimentó con el pop en algunos temas, también pudo producir videos de mejor calidad y realizó presentaciones en vivo bajo el concepto de Rock Teatral. Mauricio Alfaro produjo varios temas con un grupo experimental de estudio llamado TIZZIANA OCTUBRE GRIS.
En 1998 Kristián Calderón y Rafael Alfaro se reúnen y bajo la influencia de la nostalgia tratan de reunir de nuevo a OVNI, para esto llaman a Mauricio Alfaro, estando los tres miembros originales y dejando los egos aparte deciden producir un álbum que evocaría las raíces del grupo tomando como base el rock progresivo. De esta manera se acuerda hacer un álbum doble (el primero producido por algún artista en El Salvador) que tuviera en el primer CD música nueva basándose en el concepto del "Ser" y refiriéndose a éste como a una tercera persona en todos los temas, en el segundo CD poner todos los temas que no fueron producidos pero no promovidos comercialmente por OVNI, de esta manera se lanza para el 2000 el álbum doble "ENTRE SERES Y SUS RAÍCES", pero antes, a finales de 1999 se lanza el primer sencillo "Y SI VUELVE" el cual llega a los primeros lugares de popularidad en las radios locales demostrando asÌ que OVNI aun puede hacer música y asegurando su lugar en el siglo pasado como la única banda de rock progresivo en El Salvador y una de las más creativas y luchadoras por promover lo original y lo conceptual en el rock en español además extraen más sencillos como: "CUESTIONARIO Y COMENTARIOS PARA UN SER ACTUAL" , "TUS SIGNOS" y "SU ESTADO NATURAL" juntamente preparan sus presentaciones en vivo con dos nuevos miembros; Omar Salazar en la batería y Jorge Lara en los teclados.
En el 2001 se lanza un álbum en vivo recopilado de las presentaciones del año pasado titulado "LA EXPERIENCIA", para este entonces ya no se cuenta con la participación de Jorje en los teclados ya que éste abandona al grupo después de las primeras presentaciones. Después de esto Mauricio Alfaro y Kristián Calderón se dedican a proyectos individuales, de esta manera Rafael Alfaro decide invitar de nuevo a Jorge Lara y junto con él a Javier Gómez en el bajo y Octavio Salmán en la batería para comenzar la producción del álbum conceptual; "HUMANOS PERO NO TERRESTRES" el cual ve la luz en el 2004, este álbum abre las puertas en países como Japón, además de algunos Europeos dado a que se retoma el cantar en "Inglés". Sencillos como "THE TIMES WHEN WE WERE FREE", "REMEMBERING", "EL MAESTRO" llegan a algunas listas de popularidad y de esta manera que OVNI adopta el concepto de "Proyecto" más que el de una banda.
El 7 de Agosto de este mismo año se realiza la última presentación en vivo de OVNI hasta la fecha.
El 2006 se lanza" LOS VERDADEROS PROPÓSITOS DE DIOS" con la variante de José Chavarría en la batería sustituyendo a Octavio. Siempre bajo un concepto global se canta en Inglés y Español al igual que en el álbum anterior y de aquí podemos hablar de canciones como; "FRIENDSHIP?", "LA DESICIÓN". Pero particularmente de "ELECTROELLE AND ROCKYKATE" la cual se coló como número 1 en La Femenina durante suficientes semanas como para quedar en 4to lugar en las 111 mejores de ese año, lastimosamente esta no llegó más alto ya que dado a comentarios de Rafael Alfaro con respecto a la eliminación de un programa radial llamado "Mil novecientos ayer" se tomaron represalias y OVNI fue vetado de la radio, sacando de programación la canción cuando esta estaba aún en la lista de éxitos. Para el 2009 se lanza un álbum virtual a nivel de iTunes y Reverbnation con una recopilación de canciones llamado "AN OVNI'S COLLECTION" donde se incluyen las versiones radiales de las canciones: "ELECTROELLE AND ROCKYKATE" y "CONTRA NADA" (AGAINST NADA en el álbum LVPdD).
Este mismo año Rafael y Mauricio deciden colaborar juntos de nuevo para crear un ambicioso proyecto que aunque no se planeó así desde el principio llegó a ser el tributo por excelencia a su país natal: EL SALVADOR, nos referimos a "SALVADOREÑO/ALIEN", que es lanzado en el 2011, este álbum doble contiene canciones en Inglés (los Salvadoreños que vienen del norte), en Español (los que viven acá) y temas instrumentales que se refieren a Iconos, características y eventos históricos, políticos y culturales de la historia del país. Canciones como; "UN NIÑO TENAZ", "FEELS ALRIGHT SALVADOREAN", "ODA A LOS DE ALLÁ", "QUISIERA", son algunos de los que han invadido las ondas hertzianas por el momento, dado a esta variedad en el contenido y como se desarrolla la obra, Rafael la describe de esta manera; "Salvadoreño/Alíen más que un álbum conceptual progresivo es como el SCORE de una película llamada; EL SALVADOR... La cual aun no se ha hecho..."
Y la historia continúa.....
